A Few of My Favourite Things
Today’s training run will see me starting downtown and working my way to the Ritchie neighbourhood, over to Whyte Ave, and back through Downtown for some dinner and a nightcap before calling it a day.
This is the plan. As we all know. Plans are useless sometimes. Today’s Layover.Run training run happens to be one of those days as things fall apart, even before the beer starts flowing.
Stop One: Lock Stock Coffee
Running west down Jasper Ave from my place, Lock Stock is going to be my first stop so I can start my day with a nice base layer consisting of a breakfast sandwich, a mini chocolate cake, americano, and water.
Lock Stock is a coffee shop by day, neighbourhood bar by night, that I use for both AM & PM meetings — often. I want to capture the whole vibe so I take some photos of a meeting sitting in my usual booth. I take a frame or two of proprietor Mr Blair McFarlane and chat for a few minutes on my way out. Off to a great start.
After a short jaunt down Jasper we head into the river valley via the funicular. The plan is to head south through Mill Creek Ravine to 76th Ave.
Always a hotbed for friends, I manage a couple photos on my way.
Stop Two: Transcend Coffee in Ritchie
Double shot of espresso. Short, sweet, delicious. And let’s not forget to mention just how beautiful Transcend Coffee can make a shot of espresso look. Basking in the glow of the sunlight of the south facing window, I want to pause for longer. Sadly, I don’t have a lot of time as I don’t want to miss Farrow with them closing at 3:00pm.
Stop Three: Farrow in Ritchie
Technically after 3pm, the fellas at Farrow are still open when I come flying across 76th Ave from Transcend. Perhaps I think I had more time. Perhaps I was really enjoying my espresso. Either way, Farrow Vanilla Sprinkles & Coconut Lime donuts procured. Perhaps I receive a bonus birthday donut. Perhaps this was one more donut than I should have.
I enjoy my two donuts and take a little breather before heading to DaCapo for more of the good stuff.
Stop Four: DaCapo
DaCapo at one point in my life is a day to day stop. Agency life. It has its perks. These days DaCapo is my “south of the river” homebase that I default to for coffee meetings. Naturally, I drop a double espresso and head out along Whyte Ave to Ohana donuts.
Stop Five: Ohana Donuts
Ohana Donuts are cemented in my top three donut places in Edmonton. This is the weekly special, the Pom’berry Cheesecake. Yeah, it’s pretty alright. Even having just scarfed down a couple Farrow big boys, this donut is delightful and hits the spot.
More Farrow. I am hunting the Sponge Toffee Chocolate donut.
Stop Six: Farrow 109th
I have to be up front. Hindsight will eventually reveal that if fortune is on my side, the Ritchie Farrow would have been closed.
Now here me out!
This Sponge Toffee Chocolate donut is clearly the best of the three. The other two don’t really compare. My game plan when I started this business today is to only eat this donut from Farrow. I got excited and didn’t stick to my plan. The donut-gut-rot I’ve got going on right now is my negative feedback loop highlighting the issue with my choices.
Stick to your game plan. Discipline. Lesson learned. Sorry Kipchoge.
Stop Seven: Sugarbowl Cafe
Sure I am a little rushed to get here, and have to cut Leva from the schedule, but I make it to Sugarbowl Cafe for 4pm as planned. Not a bad day practicing running around documenting donuts. Yeah, today is work. I love my job.
Now, time to enjoy some time with friends.
Thanks Edmonton! I started a little late, made one poor choice about a donut that double downed as my demise. After Sugarbowl I simply can’t think of eating or drinking anymore, so we run around to Groat Rd. and back up to downtown — home.
At one point last night Darcy Budworth asks me what I am “practicing” for and I sort of laugh at first because using the word practice in the title of this run is a bit of a joke. But I’ve since thought about it, and I am practicing a lot on this run.
I’m practicing planning a route. I’m practicing allocating time to document stops, while still enjoying the fruits of the stops. I’m practicing making choices on the fly when timelines need to be adjusted. I’m practicing taking photos with the SLR, processing on my phone, and posting to Insta stories in realtime. I’m practicing making poor choices leading to gut rot and cutting food stops from a run.
So I guess I really am practicing. This is kind of what I do now, so sure, perhaps it is my birthday today, but I’m still out here grinding. We talkin’ bout practice?
